Hillcats Cause Flying Queens to Sputter, 67-55
PLAINVIEW, Texas – Rogers State women’s basketball found the beat to complete the West Texas Two-Step and defeat Wayland Baptist 67-55 inside the Hutcherson Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Hillcats gained its largest lead of the opening half off an eight foot jumper by Ariani Silva on an inbounds pass from Sasha Barnes as RSU took a 26-19 lead with 3:09 remaining in the first period.
The Flying Queens held the lead for the first two and a half minutes before RSU took control, holding leads of three, five, six and seven points in the first 20 minutes of play.
Coach Amy Williams’ squad held onto a 27-21 halftime lead as the Cats kept the Flying Queens down by seven points in the first five minutes of the second half.
A Gianna Woods 3-pointer from the top of the key with 12:49 remaining in the contest gave RSU its first double-digit lead of the game, up 43-33.
WBU cut the Hillcat lead to seven points with 1:30 to go off a jumper by Alex Williams and quickly sent the Cats to the line. RSU connected on 6-of-7 from the free throw stripe to hold on for the 67-55 victory.
Gianna Woods tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 points. Logan Froese led all scorers with 18 points going 7-of-8 from the field. Ariani Silva registered 14 points for the Cats who shot 41.2 percent from long distance and 82.8 percent from the free throw line.
Williams led the Flying Queens with 14 points while Erika Raymond tallied 10 points while in foul trouble most of the game. WBU hit just 58.8 percent from the charity stripe as the Flying Queens nabbed nine steals.
