Hillcats Dominate Doane in Doubleheader Sweep

CLAREMORE, Okla.- The Rogers State softball team cruised to a pair of run-rule victories over Doane (Neb.) on Friday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.

The Hillcats banged out 19 hits in the two games that each ended after five innings. In the opener, RSU used a six-run second inning to propel the team to a 10-2 win. In the nightcap, the Cats posted a five-run first en route to an 11-3 short game.

GAME ONE

After a scoreless opening frame, the Hillcats dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, using three hits to drive in six runs. Yolanda Rios got the offense started with a first pitch solo shot over the centerfield fence. Shona Guerrero followed with a single and Katrina Loy walk with both players advancing into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Toni Shurtliff. Ashlie Fauchier reached on an error and Guerrero scored. Jamie King drew a walk to load the bases. Candace Monigold ended the scoring in the inning with a two-out grand slam blasted over the right field fence.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with a RBI single by Aisha Lee but the Cats continued to pound the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded Shurtliff belted a triple down the right field line, driving in three runs. She scored on a single by King to give RSU a 10-1 lead.

The Vikings tallied a run in the fourth on a Brooke Sampson RBI single down the left field line but the Hillcats retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Rios (6-0) earned the complete game win in the circle allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while fanning six. Kylie Garrett (0-4) was tagged with the loss as she tossed two innings, allowing nine runs, five earned on five hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats got a quick start in the nightcap with a five-run first inning and cruised to an 11-3 run rule victory.

King led off the first with a double and Simpson followed with a walk. Monigold drove them in with a double to deep left-center field. Taran Threet singled up the middle to send Monigold home. The Hillcats continued to smash the ball in the inning as Guerrero belted a two-RBI double before the Tigers made a pitching change. Kelsey Huenink silenced the RSU bats as the Tigers retired the next three batters to end the ending.

Guerrero added to the Hillcats’ lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out home run over the left field fence.

Huenink put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with a solo shot over the centerfield fence but the Hillcats tacked on four runs in the bottom of the inning. Once again Monigold blast a two-run home run over the right field fence. The Hillcats scored their final two runs on a Doane error and a RBI single by Tory Fitch.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and pinch hitter Whitney Hinn registered a RBI singled to shallow centerfield. Lee drove in a run with a fielder’s choice but the Hillcats ended the inning with a groundout to secure the 11-3 run rule.

Monigold went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the nightcap. She tallied a team-best eight RBIs in the doubleheader.

Laura Fleck (3-0) registered the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Linsey Curtis tossed the fifth and allowed two unearned runs on three hits.

Rogers State (9-0) returns to action on Saturday as the Cats host Doane at 2 p.m. and Midland College at 4 p.m. at the Diamond Sports Complex.
