Hillcats Streak Past Lady Rangers, 77-55
Rogers State opened the New Year in fine form as the Hillcat women extended their win streak to five games with a 77-55 victory over Northwestern Okla. State (Alva, Okla.) Saturday night at the Claremore Expo.
Junior Sophia Piggie posted a career-high 19 points to lead four RSU players in double figures. The Hillcats shot 48 percent from the floor and made 8-of-16 3-point attempts to run away from the Lady Rangers.
Coach Amy Williams’ team overcame another slow start in the first half. The Cats found themselves in a five point hole after managing just 15 points at the midway point of the opening period. A three point play by sophomore Katie Rice sparked a 12-0 run to push RSU in front 27-20. Rice sliced between two defenders on a nice feed from Hunter Peterson right before the halftime horn to increase the lead to 41-28.
Rice scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half while Piggie and senior Azzie Knox took over the heavy lifting in the second half. Knox was held scoreless in the first half but responded with 11 second half points. Piggie poured in 10 points in the second stanza to ensure Northwestern never threatened the lead. Junior Autumn Thompson joined the trio in double figures with 11 points and also tallied a game-high five assists.
The Hillcats were outrebounded 38-31 but did a much better job taking care of the basketball than the Lady Rangers. RSU had 15 assists compared to just 13 turnovers while Northwester posted 11 assists to 25 turnovers.
Rogers State (9-4, 3-2) pushed the longest winning streak in the history of the program to five games and moved into fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. The Hillcats will travel to Oklahoma Christian Monday night for the start of a three game week. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Eagles’ Nest and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
