WACO, Texas – Rogers State forward
Jake Simpson was named the Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday (Oct. 3) by the Heartland Conference.
Simpson, a sophomore from Cambridge, England, had an impressive week, scoring two game-winning overtime golden goals to lead the Hillcats to a perfect 2-0 record. Simpson started his stellar week with the game winner in a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3-ranked St. Edward's as RSU snapped SEU's 21-game conference winning streak and defeated the highest ranked opponent in program history. The forward made it back-to-back overtime golden goals with a strike from 30 yards to win, 3-2, over Dallas Baptist on Saturday after the Hillcats rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The sophomore scored 30 seconds into the overtime period.
For the season, Simpson leads the Heartland Conference in goals (five) and game-winning goals (three). He has started in all 10 games as a forward this season, his first at RSU.
With the 2-0 week, the Hillcats are currently on a three-game winning streak and are 6-2-2 overall on the season.
RSU goes on the road for its next three contests. The Hillcats start on Thursday (Oct. 6) at West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
