WACO, Texas – The Rogers State softball team swept the Heartland Conference Player of the Week awards as freshmen
Allie McFetridge and
Andrea Morales were named Heartland Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday (April 25) as announced by the league.
McFetridge, a freshman from Fullerton, California, helped the Hillcats to a perfect 5-0 record with wins over Northeastern State and Lubbock Christian during last week. She started the week with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI in a win over in-state rival Northeastern State. The freshman then had one RBI in each of the three wins over LCU in the three-game series. McFetridge went 4-for-9 with three RBI and one home run against the Lady Chaps. For the week, she hit .412 and launched two home runs and totaled six RBI. This is McFetridge's second player of the week award this season.
Morales, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, held the top offense in the Heartland Conference scoreless in nearly two complete games. The freshman led the Hillcats to a 3-0 weekend sweep of Lubbock Christian. In the finale on Friday, Morales pitched a complete 7.0 inning two-hitter with four strikeouts. In the second game of the series, the Texan went 6.2 innings with six hits given up and four strikeouts. The freshman got two saves in 3.1 innings of work in a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival NSU on Tuesday. She allowed only three hits in the 3.1 innings against the RiverHawks. For the week, she pitched 17.0 shutout innings with only 11 hits allowed and 12 strikeouts. Opponents hit only .177. This is the first career player of the week award for Morales.
With a sweep of Newman yesterday, the Hillcats moved into a tie for first place in the Heartland Conference with only three games left in the regular season. RSU holds a 16-9 record to tie with St. Mary's, who plays three-games against St. Edward's this weekend.
The Hillcats look to capture the Heartland Conference championship this weekend with a three-game series at Oklahoma Christian. The weekend begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m. in Oklahoma City.
