DALLAS, Texas- The Rogers State men’s and women’s cross country teams tallied impressive showings at its first Heartland Conference Championship.
The 2013 Heartland Conference Championship was held in Mansfield, Texas at the Mansfield Sports Complex. The men's race was an 8k course while the women ran a 6k course.
Ten teams competed at the meet but only six could compete for the overall team championship. The Hillcats along with Oklahoma Christian, McMurry, and Lubbock Christian are all provisional members for NCAA DII, therefore, are not allowed to win Conference Championships. The runners from each of these schools were allowed to earn All-Conference honors.
Had the Hillcats team results qualified, the RSU women would have tallied a third place finish and the men would have registered a fourth place finish.
A pair of freshman tallied All-Heartland Conference honors for the Hillcats as Baylor Harvey and Andi Gourd each landed on the squad. Harvey led the men’s team and was the second fastest freshman in the race with a ninth place finish in 26:01.3. The time was the Cleveland, Okla. native’s personal best and a new RSU freshman record as he beat his own time of 26:06 from earlier this season.
Gourd led the Hillcat women with a time of 22:15.9 to finish in 11th. The RSU women tallied 102 points with an average time of 22:34.1. Haley Taylor tallied 19th with a time of 22:53.6, Maria Apolinar registered a time of 22:54.6 to land a 21st place finish and Christi Dougherty rounded out the top five in 24th place with a time of 23:11.6.
Olivia Jalomo slid in behind Dougherty with a 27th place finish in 23:15.8 and Hunter Thompson came in 32nd with a time of 23:25.7.
The RSU men’s team tallied a team average of 26:36.6 in the 8k event which is a program best. Chandler Smith ran a personal best and followed Harvey with a time of 26:21.7 to place 16th, earning honorable mention all-conference. Freshman Marchez Coriz just missed tallying all-conference honorable mention, finishing in 18th with a time of 26:26.3.
