Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hillcats Halted by Southern Nazarene, 1-0

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The third time was a charm for Southern Nazarene as the Crimson Storm avenged two previous losses to Rogers State and claimed the Region VI Tournament championship 1-0 on Tuesday at Stars Field.

Rachel Eguren scored the only goal of the match 11:06 into the contest and halted the Hillcats magical season one win shy of the national tournament. RSU couldn't break through despite outshooting SNU 21-to-10 and posting twice as many shots on goal. The Hillcats were shutout for just the second time all season.

RSU defeated SNU 4-3 in a regular season match at Soldier Field and pulled out a 2-1 double overtime win over the Storm in the semifinals of the conference tournament. A third victory, however, wasn't in the cards for the Hillcats.

Southern Nazarene defeated top-seeded John Brown in penalty kicks Monday night to reach the regional finals and is now headed for Daytona Beach and the NAIA National Tournament next week.

It was a bittersweet conclusion to a remarkable season for the RSU women's soccer team. The Hillcats posted one of the best records in the country at 20-3 en route to claiming the school's first conference championship. Head Coach Derek Larkin was named the Sooner Athletic Conference coach of the year while senior phenom Robin Sutherland was named conference newcomer and offensive player of the year.

The loss to SNU ended Sutherland's bid at breaking the NAIA single season scoring record. She finished the season with 44 goals, just four shy of the all-time mark. Her 44 goals and 100 total points were the most posted by an NAIA player this season.

Sutherland and Kacie Hohenberger are the only senior's who will depart from Larkin's inaugural squad. Hohenberger was named first team all-conference and ranked among the nation's best in assist in 2007.

The leadership and stellar play of the senior duo will be sorely missed. However, the future of the RSU program appears very bright with 13 freshman, three sophomores and four juniors remaining in the fold.
