CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's soccer team made quite a splash with its introduction to Sooner Athletic Conference play on Tuesday. The Hillcats stunned No. 20 Oklahoma Christian 2-0 in their first ever conference match in front of more than 300 fans at Soldier Field.
Â
The Lady Eagles entered the year as the pre-season favorite to win the SAC and climbed into the NAIA national polls at No. 20 last week. However, the Hillcats showed no signs of intimidation during the first conference match of the season for both teams.
Â
RSU senior Robin Sutherland broke a scoreless tie with 36:38 left to play in the second half on an assist from Vanessa Oxford. Sutherland added her second goal just inside the 10-minute mark with a header off a corner kick from Kacie Hohenberger.
Â
Goal keeper Bailey Lynn kept the Eagles out of the net with 10 saves, including a pivotal blocked penalty kick with five minutes remaining in the game.
Â
"Our girls played a phenomenal match tonight," said Derek Larkin, RSU soccer coach. "This was a huge win for our program."
Â
The Hillcats improved to 3-0-0 on the season while the Lady Eagles fell 2-2-0. RSU will travel to John Brown on Saturday for their second conference match of the season. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
