Hillcat Men's Soccer Program Earns First Win

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State men's soccer program earned its first ever victory with a 3-1 win over Bacone College at Soldier Field on Wednesday.

The Hillcat women cruised to a 3-0 win over the Lady Warriors and the RSU men followed with an equally impressive victory. The matches were the first official competitions for the new soccer programs.

The Bacone and Rogers State men battled rough field conditions through most of the first half following heavy rainstorms that covered the Claremore area for much of the afternoon. The Hillcats broke a scoreless tie when junior Vitor Mantovani put RSU on top 1-0 with 8:22 left in the first half. Mantovani made it 2-0 RSU at the 36:42 mark in the second half on an assist from sophomore Shemord Thompson. Freshman Salim Nelson tallied the final Hillcat goal of the afternoon with 10:34 remaining in the game. The Warriors scored their only goal of the day when Nikko Rosa found the back of the net with 5:24 left to play. Starting goal keeper Sean Surridge didn't surrender a goal in his 82 minutes between the posts for the Hillcats.

Both the men's and women's teams improved to 1-0-0 on the season. Coach Derek Larkin's men's team will travel to Muskogee this weekend to face College of the Southwest and the University of Texas – Brownsville. The next home matches for the men's and women's teams are slated for Sept. 11 as the Hillcats host Oklahoma Christian in their first Sooner Athletic Conference competitions.
