Softball Hillcats Split with Bacone

MUSKOGEE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball program earned its second doubleheader split in as many dates as the Hillcats traded one-run wins with Bacone College in Muskogee Tuesday.

RSU came up short despite a great effort from sophomore pitcher Kelli Dunagan in the first game of the day. Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning and had to settle the matter in eight innings. The Lady Warriors put together back-to-back base hits in the bottom of the eighth to clinch a 2-1 win. The Hillcats used a three-run fifth inning to complete a come-from-behind win in the nightcap as they salvaged a split with a 5-4 victory.

GAME ONE

Dunagan worked masterfully through seven innings, allowing just one unearned run while racking up 13 strikeouts. She fanned 10 of the first 14 batters she faced and issued only two walks in the game. RSU claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning after Katie Bointy reached on an error to start the inning and scored on an infield single by Chasidy Austin.

Bacone evened the score in the bottom of the fifth with an unearned run of its own. Allena Harley reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a two-out infield error by the Hillcats. Using the international tie-breaker, (which places a runner on second base to start the inning), the Hillcats left Tanya Koch stranded at third base in the top of the eighth. Bacone loaded the bases with the ITB runner, a hit-by-pitch and an infield single in the bottom of the inning. With the bases juiced, Lindsey Glass laid down a bunt and executed a squeeze play to plate Alex Ramirez and give Bacone a 2-1 win.

Robin Chriestenson allowed just two hits and tallied six strikeouts without yielding a walk to lead the Lady Warriors to their first win of the season.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats trailed Bacone 3-1 after the Warriors touched RSU starter Jenny Johnson for three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning of Game 2. RSU cut the lead in half with a two-out RBI double by Lauren Looper in the fourth. Bacone quickly answered with a two-out RBI double by Toni Lyles in home half of the inning to make it 4-2.

The Cats took the lead for good in the fifth with the help of some shaky defense by the Warriors. Lillian Nevarez and Marie Gaudet both reached to start the inning on back-to-back errors by the left side of the Bacone infield. Randi Tyler chased both players home on a two-RBI double to center field to tie the game. Then, with two outs and runners on the corners, Tyler stole home while the Warriors were distracted trying to cut down Megan Wood, who got intentionally hung up between first and second on the base paths.

It proved to be the winning run as Dunagan (2-2) didn't allow a runner to reach third base over her last three innings of relief. She pitched the final 5.1 innings and gave up just one earned run to record her second victory of the season.

Rogers State (2-2) travels to Ft. Worth, Tex., this weekend to participate in the Cowtown Classic Friday and Saturday. The Hillcats return home next week to open up conference play at the Hillcat Complex against Oklahoma Christian. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
