Stars Streak Past Hillcats, 12-2

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A day after escaping with a one-run victory at the Hillcat Complex, No. 9 Oklahoma City crushed Rogers State 12-2 at Jim Wade Stadium in Oklahoma City Sunday.

The Stars erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning and chased RSU starter Tyler Whitaker from the game. Whitaker (1-1) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits while facing just nine batters in the shortest outing of his Hillcat career. OCU tallied six hits in the frame before Whitaker was lifted for freshman reliever Sam Cornell. David Dennis greeted Cornell with a two-run homer to cap the eight-run inning.

The Hillcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brandon Denton led off the game with a triple and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Greg Speed. However, the Hillcats couldn't keep pace with the Stars long ball attack. Brent Weaver, who homered twice on Saturday, belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to give OCU an 11-1 cushion.

RSU plated a single run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Blake Kelley. OCU's Brandon Moss answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to put the Stars on top 12-2. The Hillcats were retired in order in the seventh and the game was halted via the run-rule.

Rogers State (7-4, 2-3) dropped its third consecutive conference game after winning its first two. The Hillcats will face Oklahoma Wesleyan in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon before returning home Thursday to host Northwestern Oklahoma State.
