Softball Hillcats Squeak by Lady Eagles Twice

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers Stated edged Oklahoma Christian in a pair of tightly contested conference games at the Hillcat Complex Wednesday.

The Hillcats scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim the first game of the day and then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the nightcap. The doubleheader sweep gave RSU its first conference victories as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference.

GAME ONE

A two out error put the Hillcats in a 5-4 hole entering the bottom of the eighth inning. However, the Lady Eagles quickly returned the favor. Randi Tyler started the bottom of the eighth on second base via the international tie-breaker rules. Kelli Dunagan promptly laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by OC third baseman Rachel Smith. Smith's throw to first was off the mark and sailed into foul territory down the right field line, allowing Tyler to score the tying run from second. Lady Eagles' right fielder Deidre Chatigny fielded the errant throw and then made one of her own trying to cut down Dunagan as she raced for second base. Chatigny's throw ended up in left field and Dunagan completed her short trip around the bases to give RSU a 6-5 victory.

It was a fitting end to a game that featured defensive struggles on each side. Both teams committed three errors. All four of the Lady Eagles runs were unearned. The Hillcats held a 3-1 lead until the top of the fifth inning. OC tied the game with the help of an RSU error and an RBI single by Sandra Darmstadt. Neither team could scratch a run across in the sixth or seventh as the game was forced into extra innings.

Jenny Johnson (4-0) worked the final three innings for RSU and allowed just one unearned run to record her fourth win. Caitlin Matthies (2-1) suffered her first loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits over seven innings of work. Dunagan went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Hillcats.

GAME TWO

Oklahoma Christian rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game before RSU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to seal an 8-6 win.

The Lady Eagles put together five consecutive hits in the sixth inning to knot the game 6-6. Dunagan came on in relief of Johnson to record the final three outs of the inning. The Hillcats regained the lead on an RBI grounder by Marie Gaudet and added an insurance run when Lillian Nevarez swiped home on a double steal.

OC led 2-0 in the first inning before Randi Tyler belted her first home run of the season. Tyler lined a 1-1 offering from Linzie Farris over the left field wall to give RSU a 3-2 lead. The Cats tacked on two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before the Lady Eagles rallied back. Nevarez, Dunagan, Tyler and Tanya Koch each had two hits in the contest for RSU.

Dunagan (6-2) picked up the win with two innings of relief. Farris (1-3) pitched all six innings and took the loss for OC. Rogers State (10-2) extended its winning streak to nine games with the sweep and will take six days off before hosting No. 1 Oklahoma City next Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex.
