Hillcats Blast Bobcats in Doubleheader

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State belted four home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of College of the Ozarks (Point Lookout, Mo.) at the Hillcat Complex Tuesday.

Ryan Littlejohn's third inning grand slam lifted the Hillcats to a 7-2 victory in the opener while Zach Hamby, Greg Speed and Blake Kelley went deep in the nightcap, leading to 9-5 win.

GAME ONE

Littlejohn busted the game open with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third inning. Bobcats' starter Seth Thompson struggled to find the strike zone early in the inning and issued a bases-loaded walk to Zach Hamby to put RSU in front, 2-1. Littlejohn made Thompson pay for his mistakes as he cranked his fourth home run of the season to push the lead to 6-1.

The Hillcats managed just five hits in the contest but received a solid effort from the pitching staff. Four pitchers combined to allow two runs over seven innings. Starter Tyler Whitaker worked the first three and gave up one run on four hits. Senior Dusty Carriger (1-0) picked up the win in his first outing of the spring with 1.2 innings of relief. Brett Trzcinski was also effective in his first appearance of the season. He allowed only one hit and racked up three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Ryan White tossed the final inning to finish off the Bobcats.

Littlejohn tallied four RBI while Hamby plated two more. Thompson (0-2) suffered the loss for College of the Ozarks.

GAME TWO

The Bobcats jumped in front with three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Ryne Emerick delivered a two RBI double to give College of the Ozarks its first lead of the afternoon.

The lead stood until the bottom of the sixth when the Hillcats exploded for six runs with two outs. Brandon Denton legged out an infield single to score Tyler Harold and cut the lead to one, 5-4. Greg Speed followed with his first homer of the season, a shot to left-center field, to put the cats in front. Blake Kelley then matched Speed's effort with a towering shot over the left field wall. Two more runs came home on a throwing error and when the dust had settled the Hillcats had gained a 9-5 lead.

Freshman Matt Brimer (1-1) pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the first win of his collegiate career. He retired four of the five batters he faced with one strikeout. Hamby ripped a solo homer in the third inning and finished 3-for-3 in the nightcap. Speed had two hits and two RBI while Wright drove in three runs.

Rogers State (15-5) won its fifth straight and will take two days off before hosting Lubbock Christian in a three-game series this weekend. The Chaps are ranked No. 4 in the country and will enter the series with a 22-1 record on the season. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex.
