BETHANY, Okla. - For the past two weeks the No. 18 Rogers State softball team has found a way to win with little-to-no offense.
Â
The Hillcats have pinned their hopes to a squeeze bunt, a timely hit or an opponent's miscue in order to squeak by.
On Tuesday, that changed in a hurry as "small ball" went out the window. The once dormant RSU offense erupted for 18 runs on 22 hits and swept Southern Nazarene in a pair of conference games at the Cypert Athletic Complex in Bethany.
RSU opened the day with a 10-3 win and completed the sweep with an 8-3 decision in the nightcap to extend its winning streak to six games.
GAME ONE
The Hillcats wasted no time making a statement in the opener. Sophomore Kelli Dunagan cranked a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Megan Wood stretched the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Crimson Storm answered with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to tie the game. However, junior transfer Jenny Johnson shut down SNU the rest of the way with four innings of scoreless relief. The RSU offense was far from finished. The Cats batted around in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits. Tanya Koch, Marie Gaudet, Wood and Dunagan all tallied RBI hits in the inning.
Â
RSU added two runs on four hits in the sixth as Wood, Gaudet and Randi Tyler roped doubles off of SNU starter Andrea Pare. Pare labored through seven innings for the Storm, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits.
Â
Johnson earned her fifth win with a dominant performance out of the pen. She scattered four hits and fanned six across four innings of work. Dunagan paced the Hillcat offense with three hits and four RBI.
GAME TWO
Â
It took a little bit longer for the offense to get going in Game 2. The Cats and Crimson Storm traded runs in the fourth inning and remained tied at 1-1 entering the sixth.
Â
RSU scored seven runs in the final two frames to claim a second consecutive decisive victory. The Cats scratched across four runs on three hits in the sixth. Dunagan again delivered the crushing blow with a two-out, two RBI single. Sara Walkup started the seventh with a double and scored on a single by Lillian Nevarez. Lauren Looper chased Nevarez home with a single and scored the final Hillcat run of the day on a wild pitch.
Â
Johnson (6-0) picked up her second win of the day with four innings of relief. She surrendered two unearned runs and racked up six strikeouts without yielding a walk. Dunagan and Tyler led the offensive attack with two hits apiece.
Â
Rogers State (17-3, 4-0) remains in a tie for first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with Oklahoma Baptist. The Hillcats, who have won 16 of their last 17 games, will compete in the Pittsburg State University Tournament this weekend in Pittsburg, Kan. RSU will open the tournament against Missouri Southern Friday at noon.
