Game Recap: Baseball |

Hillcats Take One Game from No. 9 Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Rogers State baseball team earned its first win over a ranked opponent and salvaged the final game of a three-game conference series by outlasting No. 9 Wayland Baptist, 10-8 at Wilder Field in Plainview, Texas, Saturday.

The Hillcats pounded out 16 hits as Zach Hamby and Eric Schulz both homered. Hamby enjoyed a monster weekend that included three home runs and seven RBI. However, the Pioneers escaped with two wins on Friday.

Junior southpaw Chris Graves tossed a complete game one-hitter in Friday's opener, but was still tagged with the loss. RSU tallied four hits but couldn't manage a run before falling, 2-0. The Cats couldn't keep pace with the Pioneers in the nightcap. Both teams homered three times and combined for 27 hits. RSU surrendered eight runs over the first two innings and couldn't complete a comeback, losing 13-8.

GAME ONE

Wayland Baptist scored its first run without the aid of a hit. Graves walked Paul Rodriguez to start the bottom of the second inning. Rodriguez advanced to second on a balk and moved to third on a wild pitch. Eddie Allen then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give WBU a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Torres homered to left field in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-0. It proved to be the only hit of the game for the Pioneers.

Graves tossed six innings and gave up one earned run while striking out five. The Hillcats best scoring opportunity came in the top of the third. Brandon Denton belted a two out single to left field, but Tyler Harold was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base. RSU also left runners stranded in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings. Ryan Littlejohn singled to start the seventh, but was promptly erased on a double play ground out.

Graves (2-2) suffered his second loss despite turning in his best performance of the season.

GAME TWO

The Pioneer offense woke up quickly in Friday's nightcap. WBU scored twice in the first inning and added six runs in the second to take an 8-1 lead and chase RSU starter Josh Walker from the game.

RSU used six pitchers to try and stop the bleeding. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Hillcat staff produced a scoreless inning. The RSU offense did its' best to keep pace. The Cats scored four runs on six hits in the top of the third inning as Blake Kelley and Hamby both homered. However, the Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and three more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 12-5.

Hamby crushed a three-run bomb in the top of the sixth to pull RSU to within four, but the Cats would get no closer. WBU out-hit the Hillcats 17-10 in the nightcap. Walker (2-2) was charged with seven earned runs in just 1.2 innings and took the loss for RSU.

GAME THREE

The Hillcats fell behind early for the third consecutive game. A four-run second inning gave the Pioneers a 5-3 lead. RSU refused to be denied as the Cats rallied for seven unanswered runs over the next four innings to grab the lead.

WBU made a late charge with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. The Pioneers produced back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate. Sophomore reliever Grant Cosby answered the bell with a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the series finale for RSU.

Hamby's third homer of the weekend, a shot to left-center field, gave the Hillcats a 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth inning. RSU tacked on three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to five. Greg Speed, Ryan Littlejohn and Hamby led the Cats on offense with three hits apiece.

Freshman Sam Cornell (2-0) picked up his second win with seven innings of work. He allowed six runs on 10 hits while fanning six. Ninth-ranked Wayland Baptist (28-5-1, 12-3) lost for just the third time in conference play this season.

Rogers State (17-10, 8-9) snapped a five-game conference losing streak and picked up an important win over a Top 10 opponent. The Hillcats return home to face Oklahoma Baptist Thursday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
