MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Rogers State scored a season high 18 runs and belted five home runs en route to an 18-13 win over Bacone College in Muskogee Tuesday.
Â
Ryan Littlejohn and Blake Kelley each went deep twice while Ryan Salsbury cranked a grand slam for his first career homer. The Hillcats tallied a season high 21 hits and scored in eight consecutive innings to outslug the Warriors.
Â
RSU grabbed an 8-1 lead with five runs in the top of the third inning. Kelley led off with a homer and Zach Hamby followed with a walk. Back-to-back singles by Travis Harold and Joe Faircloth loaded the bases for Salsbury. The sophomore second baseman hammered an opposite field shot over the wall to empty the bags and give the Cats a seven run lead.
Â
Kelley belted his second homer in as many innings to lead off the fourth and RSU appeared to have the game wrapped up. However, the Warriors began to chip away at Hillcat starter Grant Cosby in the bottom of the fourth. Bacone plated two runs in the fourth and added two more on a homer by Julian Alvarez in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
The Warriors touched RSU reliever Randy Jones for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seven with the help of a two-out error on the Hillcat infield. The five-run inning brought the Warriors to within five, but the Cats were relentless on offense. Tyler Henderson and Brandon Denton reached to start the eighth inning and Littlejohn followed with a homer to left field. Travis Harold scored the final run of the afternoon for RSU on an RBI single by Faircloth in the top of the ninth.
Â
Jose Rivera swatted a two run homer off Ryan White in the bottom of the ninth to reach the final margin, 18-13. The Warriors cranked out 18 hits and three home runs, but simply couldn't keep pace with the Hillcats. Six RSU players had at least two hits, led by Denton and Faircloth with four apiece. Salsbury tallied a career-high five RBI while Littlejohn and Kelley combined for four home runs and six RBI.
Â
Cosby (3-0) kept his perfect record intact with six innings of work. He allowed five runs on 11 hits and fanned four. Warriors' ace Zach Wallis suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (five earned) in just three innings on the mound.
Â
Rogers State (20-11) improved to 10-1 in non-conference action and will host Bacone in the return game of the two-game series Wednesday evening. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex.
