Baseball Hillcats Blast Evangels in Doubleheader

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State completed a three-game sweep over Mid-American Christian with a pair of convincing victories over the Evangels on a sun soaked Saturday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.

RSU tallied 28 hits in the doubleheader and cruised to 11-2 and 10-0 victories in front of 275 fans at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore. Blake Kelley and Zach Hamby each went 5-for-8 on the day while freshman Joe Faircloth finished 3-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats scored in each of the first four innings to claim an early 9-2 advantage in the opener. Kelley, Travis Harold, Brandon Denton and Randy Jones each picked up an RBI in the Cats five-run fourth inning.

MACU's only runs came after RSU starter Sam Cornell walked Brad Workman and T.J. Munch to start the third. Matt Howard and Alex Webb followed with RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2. Kelley opened the bottom of the frame with a homer to left-center field, his ninth of the season. Harold followed with a double and Denton swatted an RBI single to make it 4-2.

The Hillcats tacked on two more runs after the five-run fourth to reach the final margin, 11-2. Cornell (5-2) fanned a season high 10 in just five inning of work. He scattered two hits and issued five walks while picking up his team-leading fifth win. Ryan White tossed two scoreless innings of relief to complete the win. Kelly and Jones each tallied three hits in the contest and were joined by Denton and Schulz with multi-RBI games.

GAME TWO

RSU pounded out 15 hits in the nightcap before the game was halted via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Faircloth hammered a three-run shot over the right-center field wall in the bottom of the fifth to record his first collegiate home run and give the Cats an 8-0 lead. He added a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth to score Hamby and reach the final margin, 10-0.

Hamby and Ryan Salsbury joined Faircloth with three hits in the nightcap. Speed and Kelley each had two. Tyler Whitaker (5-2) tossed five scoreless innings to record the win and match Cornell with five victories. D.J. Thompson worked a scoreless sixth to close the book on the Evangels.

Rogers State (29-13, 16-11) completed its third series sweep over a conference opponent this season. The Hillcats will play non-conference games at Central Baptist (Conway, Ark.) and University of the Ozarks (Clarksville, Ark.) Monday and Tuesday before closing out the regular season against Oklahoma Christian next weekend.
