CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State Hillcats rewarded fans who endured frigid temperatures Friday night at Soldier Field with a stunning, 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian in Claremore.
Junior Carlos Zuta scored the game winner on a textbook pass from Vitor Mantovani with just 63 seconds remaining in regulation. The win pulled the Cats even with the Eagles in the conference standings, who were coming off an upset victory over No. 12 Oklahoma City last weekend.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half before RSU's Desmond Fitzgerald found the back of the net in the 59th minute on an assist from TJ Martin. The lead held for only 12 minutes as Pablo Hernandez answered the bell for OC. The match appeared headed for overtime until Mantovani threaded a perfect pass from the left corner of the field to Zuta who stood ready to receive it deep in the box. It marked the fourth goal of the season for Zuta and the first assist for Mantovani.
Rogers State (12-3-1, 4-2-1) moved into a tie for fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with the victory. The Hillcats will travel to Oklahoma City Tuesday to face Mid-America Christian. The match is slated for 3 p.m.
