CLAREMORE, Okla. - Heavy winds spoiled Rogers State's plans for a homecoming bonfire Friday night and so the Hillcat soccer team ignited the fan base with some late heroics instead.
Carlos Zuta broke a scoreless tie with a game-winning goal in the 84th minute to lift RSU past Oklahoma Christian at Soldier Field in Claremore. It marked the first postseason victory in the three-year history of the men's soccer program and propelled the Hillcats into the semifinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament next week.
"I'm really happy for our kids because they played so hard and they really wanted this one," Head Coach Derek Larkin said. "The crowd and the atmosphere were just outstanding and it was a great way to kick off homecoming weekend."
The Hillcats appeared to play with a little extra spring in their step with a mostly partisan crowd of more than 400 rooting them on. RSU controlled the match throughout, posting 12 shots on goal while holding the Eagles to just four. OC goalie Tim Spencer survived several close calls before finally surrendering the decisive blow.
Senior Robert Yang setup Zuta with a precision crossing pass just inside the box and Zuta drove it home into the right corner of the net. RSU keeper Sean Surridge recorded four saves to secure the shutout for the Cats.
Rogers State (13-5-1) will meet top-seed No. 21 USAO in the semifinal round on Monday. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Chickasha, Okla.
