Baseball Cats Drop Doubleheader to Drovers

CHICKASHA, Okla. - The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma completed a three-game sweep over Rogers State by snatching a pair of close games Saturday at Bill Smith Ballpark in Chickasha, Okla.

Offense was at a premium all afternoon as the teams endured frigid temperatures and strong winds. RSU scored two runs in the first inning of the opener but was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Drovers pulled out a 4-2 win. A two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave USAO a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

With the series sweep the Drovers avenged being swept by the Hillcats during the 2008 regular season. RSU had beaten USAO five straight times before dropping Thursday's series opener, 13-10.

GAME ONE

The Cats scratched across two runs in the top of the first inning but were held in check by USAO starter Caleb Martin for the final six frames.

Brandon Denton led off the game with a single to right field and Coby Wright followed with a walk. Blake Kelley moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt which paid dividends when Zach Hamby ripped a two-run single to left field.

Martin settled in after the first and didn't allow a runner to reach second base for the remainder of the game. RSU starter Chris Graves surrendered the early lead when he ran into trouble in the bottom of the second. Graves walked the bases loaded and then allowed a single and a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2. The lefty was chased from the game in the third after loading the bases again with no outs. Greg Ylda lifted a sacrifice fly to right to give USAO a 3-2 lead. Ylda tacked on an insurance run in the fifth after reaching on an error to start the inning.

Martin picked up the victory with a complete game performance. He scattered five hits across seven innings with six strikeouts. Graves was tagged with the loss after two-plus innings of work. Freshman Josh Phillipi pitched the final four innings for RSU and allowed just one unearned run.

GAME TWO

RSU positioned itself for the win in the nightcap but was unable to slam the door. The Hillcats scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead before giving up a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

Joe Burnell delivered the knockout punch with a two-out blast over the centerfield wall. The homer erased a valiant comeback effort by the Cats. RSU plated its first run of the game in the top of the fifth and then took the lead by manufacturing two runs in the sixth. Travis Harold drove home Mitch Gummer with a sharp grounder through the left side of the infield and Rob Rodriguez plated Luis Caraballo on a safety squeeze.

However, the lead was short lived. Ylda worked RSU reliever Arten White for a two-out walk in the bottom the sixth to set the stage for Burnell's game winner. The Hillcats loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before a pop up and a ground out ended the threat.

White suffered the loss in relief of starter Grant Cosby. Cosby pitched five innings and gave up two runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Ricky Duke worked 6.1 innings for USAO before giving way to Brandon Dean to record the save.

Rogers State (7-4, 0-3) has lost three straight after being swept by the Drovers. The Hillcats will return home this week to host Northwestern Oklahoma State in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. Thursday's game originally scheduled to be played in Alva has been moved to Friday afternoon in Claremore due to field construction at Northwestern. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
