RSU Softball Splits with Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. - Rogers State and Southern Nazarene split a softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Cypert Athletic Complex in Bethany, Okla.

The Crimson Storm scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure a 3-1 victory in the opener. The Hillcats responded by scoring in each of the first five innings of the nightcap en route to a 5-4 win and a series split.

GAME ONE

A two-run double by Daphne Stewart proved to be the difference in the opener as the Crimson Storm battled back for a 3-1 victory.

RSU made a strong opening statement, but Andrea Pare quickly quieted the Hillcat bats. Senior Megan Wood ripped the second pitch of the game over the left field fence for a solo homer. However, Pare managed to keep the Cats off the scoreboard the rest of the way, allowing only two more hits while striking out 11.

Katie Hale matched Wood's effort with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Nikki Kelley and Aubrey Jones cranked back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth, setting the table for Stewart. Stewart promptly belted a 2-0 offering into the left field gap to give the Storm a 3-1 lead.

Jenny Johnson took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits. Wood tallied two of the Hillcats three hits in the contest.

GAME TWO

The RSU offense sprung to life in the nightcap as the Hillcats scored one run in each of the first five innings to post a 5-4 win.

Wood led off the first with a single to left and scored on a two-out single by Johnson. Sara Walkup doubled in the second and raced home on a single to right by Katie Bointy. Wood started the third with a single and made it 3-0 when she scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnson.

SNU cut the lead to one with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and the two teams traded jabs the rest of the way. Bointy belted an RBI double in the fourth and Aubrey Jones answered with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame. Natalie Smith started the fifth with a triple down the right field line and the Cats went up 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by Lillian Nevarez. The Crimson Storm managed to plate one additional run in the bottom of the fifth, but was kept in check over the final two innings.

Johnson (15-9) picked up the win by tossing a complete-game. She allowed four runs on 11 hits with one strikeout. Wood, Walkup and Bointy each had two hits in the game.

Rogers State (17-11, 2-6) handed Southern Nazarene just its third loss of the season as the Storm fell to 23-3. The Hillcats return to Sooner Athletic Conference action on the road Monday in Chickasha, Okla. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma will host RSU in a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
