No. 1 Stars Sweep Series from Baseball Hillcats

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Rogers State narrowly missed out on notching its first win over a No.1 ranked team Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The Hillcats had the top ranked Oklahoma City Stars on the ropes but couldn't close the door in a 5-4 loss. OCU made the Cats pay for their close call in the nightcap by belting six home runs in 12-1 victory.

GAME ONE

RSU let a pair of two-run leads slip away as the Stars battled from behind to avoid the upset in the opener.

Ryan Littlejohn homered to center field to start the third inning and Brandon Denton followed with another solo job. OCU tied the game with two solo homers in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cats came roaring back in the fifth. Denton drew a one-out walk and Coby Wright hammered his first long ball of the season to put RSU on top, 4-2.

However, Brent Weaver answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to retie the game and Brandon Moss ripped a two-out double in the sixth to plate the winning run for the Stars. RSU put the tying run on base in the seventh before a double-play ended the rally.

Grant Cosby (1-2) took the loss for the Hillcats after giving up five runs on five hits in 5. 1 innings on the hill. Josh Walker worked the final two outs and yielded the game-winning hit to Moss. Garrett Parker picked up the win for the Stars with five innings of work.

RSU outhit OCU, 7-6 in the contest as Littlejohn and Wright combined for four hits and three RBI.

GAME TWO

OCU took no chances in the second game. The Stars clubbed six home runs en route to a 12-1 victory in six innings.

RSU freshman Josh Phillipi lasted just three innings and was tagged for nine runs on 11 hits. Kirk Walker opened the second inning with a dinger and three batters later Steve Vitale added a three-run bomb. Jason Muchado ripped a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to reach the run-rule, 12-1.

B.J. Wheeler tallied four of OCU's 15 hits while Vitale finished with two homers and four RBI. Zach Hamby produced the only run of the game for the Hillcats with a solo homer in the top of the first inning.

Phillipi (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for RSU. Justin Harper worked a complete-game for the Stars, yielding just three hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of work.

Rogers State (10-9, 2-7) returns home Monday to face Paul Quinn College (Dallas, Texas) at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
