SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team picked up its second conference doubleheader sweep in as many days by taking two games from Oklahoma Baptist Friday at Lady Bison Field in Shawnee, Okla.
Â
The Hillcats belted three home runs in the opener en route to a 6-2 win. After falling behind by a run in the nightcap, RSU rallied for five runs over the final three innings to post a 9-5 victory. The Cats were coming off a doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Christian Thursday and moved up to fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings following the four-game streak.
GAME ONE
Â
RSU grabbed a three-run lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Lillian Nevarez cranked a two-run homer to left-center in the first to give the Cats the early lead. Allison Bean made it 3-0 when she singled home Marie Gaudet later in the frame.
Â
OBU cut the lead to one with a pair of unearned runs, but the Hillcats answered back in a big way. Sara Walkup homered to start the fourth and Jenny Johnson went deep in the fifth. Gaudet tacked on another run in the seventh when she singled home Nevarez to reach the final margin, 6-2.
Â
Johnson tossed a complete-game, giving up just two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Amanda Hanner took the loss for the Lady Bison. Nevarez, Gaudet, Bean and Natalie Smith had two hits apiece for the Hillcats.
GAME TWO
Â
The Hillcats battled from behind to complete the sweep with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.
Â
RSU scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. However, the Lady Bison answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning with four singles and a bases clearing double by Abbey Basler.
Â
The Hillcats once again flexed their muscle to regain control. After a single by Smith and a walk by Nevarez, Johnson ripped her second home run of the day over the center field wall to make it 7-5 in the top of the fifth. It was the record 12th home run of the season for Johnson and the 50th of the year for the Hillcats overall.
Â
RSU added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Johnson shut the Bison down in order in the bottom of the frame to secure the win. Johnson (23-13) gave up five runs on 12 hits with one strikeout. Sonya Beach was tagged with the loss in a complete-game effort for OBU.
Â
Rogers State (25-15, 8-10) moved up three spots in the SAC standings in just two days with back-to-back sweeps. The Hillcats will take the weekend off and will travel to Arkansas Tech (Russellville, Ark.) for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
