LUBBOCK, Texas - The Rogers State baseball program earned a landmark victory Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas. And somehow the Hillcats managed to make it look easy.
Â
RSU knocked off the consensus No. 1 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals with a dominating 18-8 win that snapped LCU's 16-game winning streak. The victory was the first for the Cats over a No. 1-ranked team and also marked the first loss for the Chaps since dropping a 4-3 decision to Texas Tech on March 23.
Â
The 18 runs were the most posted by the Hillcats in a game this season and the most allowed by LCU since 2006. It also marked the worst home loss for the Chaps since 2004.
Â
LCU opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but it was all Hillcats after that. RSU plated 13 unanswered runs over the next four innings to take command of the series finale. Senior Ryan Littlejohn ignited the offense with a two-run home run in the second inning to tie the game.
Â
Littlejohn belted a three-run bomb in the third to give the Cats a 5-2 advantage. However, the RSU offense was just getting started. Zach Hamby added a two-run blast in the fourth and Kevin Phillips cranked a solo shot in the fifth. Littlejohn capped a five-run fifth with an RBI single to left field. He finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with six RBI.
Â
The Chaps tried to fight their way back into contention, but were held off by a gutsy performance from RSU hurler Grant Cosby. Will Stramp ripped a two-run homer in the fifth followed by a solo homer by Ross Blondin in the seventh. Another solo homer by Tanner Rindels brought LCU to within five at 13-8 in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
However, the juggernaut Hillcat offense reemerged in the ninth when Blake Kelley swatted a grand slam to put an exclamation point on the upset win. The five RSU home runs tied a team single-game record.
Â
Cosby (5-2) earned the win and also became the first Hillcat pitcher to record a complete-game victory in a nine-inning contest. The junior right-hander allowed eight runs on 17 hits while battling one of the NAIA's most imposing offensive lineups. Tanner Vickers (6-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in just 2.2 innings of work.
Â
Hamby, Kelley and Littlejohn tallied three hits apiece for RSU. The trio also combined for four home runs and 13 RBI in the contest. Rindels paced LCU with four hits.
Â
Rogers State (28-19, 12-15) will close out the regular season next week with a non-conference date Tuesday against No. 15 Bellevue University followed by a three-game series against Oklahoma Christian. Tuesday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
