Softball Cats Shoot Down No. 2 Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma City's reign over the Rogers State softball program officially came to an end Thursday night as the Hillcats notched their first victory over the Stars at Ann Lacy Stadium in Oklahoma City.

RSU rallied from two runs down for a 3-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader, marking the first ever win for the Hillcats against the powerhouse OCU program. The Stars entered the twin bill ranked No. 2 in the NAIA and had won 19 of their 20 games. RSU had lost 11 consecutive contests between the two teams, spanning four seasons, before finally breaking into the win column.

"This is definitely the biggest win for us since I've been a Hillcat," first-year Head Coach Mark Dicus said. "The kids played about as well as they could play and beat a really good team."

The Cats scored two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning to gain a 3-2 lead. Jenny Johnson retired the final 12 OCU hitters of the game in order to secure the landmark victory. RSU nearly pulled off a doubleheader sweep, losing the opener 1-0. The Stars plated the only run of the game on a throwing error by Johnson with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

GAME ONE

Johnson and OCU starter Ashley Wilburn locked horns in a brilliant pitcher's duel in the opener. The Stars avoided extra innings by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to post a 1-0 victory.

Ironically, both pitchers were involved in the game's decisive play. Wilburn laced a one-out double to left field in the seventh. Johnson induced Kendall Hobens into a groundout for the second out and appeared to be out of the inning when Amanda Howard hit a grounder back to the pitcher. However, Johnson's throw sailed wide of first base and Wilburn trotted home to score the game winner.

RSU had multiple chances to score first. Katie Bointy missed wrapping a homer around the left field foul pole by mere inches in the top of the third and the Hillcats failed to score Natalie Smith from third base on a squeeze bunt attempt in the top of the fourth. Smith's double to start the inning was the only hit of the game for RSU.

Johnson matched Wilburn out-for-out through the first six innings. She allowed just four hits before Wilburn's double and the untimely error brought home the only run in the seventh. Wilburn fanned 10 batters compared with only one walk to improve to 15-1 on the season.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats clawed back from a two-run deficit with three late tallies to knock off the Stars, 3-2 in the nightcap.

OCU scored a run in each of the first two innings, but were held in check by Johnson the rest of the way. RSU finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Smith worked a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single through the left side by Johnson.

Allison Bean, Katie Bointy and Britney Harrison ripped singles in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Bointy raced home with the eventual winning run on a passed ball. Johnson (17-11) was lights out in the pitcher's circle over the final four innings to record the win. The Stars went quietly in the seventh as Johnson retired the final two hitters on strikeouts.

Lily LaVelle suffered the loss for the Stars after giving up three runs on five hits over 5.1 innings of work. RSU outhit the Stars 6-4 in the contest.

Rogers State (19-13, 4-8) earned its first win of the season over a ranked opponent. The Hillcats will travel to Lebanon, Ill., this weekend to participate in the McKendree University Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
