CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State rebounded from a tough road loss with a strong showing Monday night as the Hillcats dropped Bacone College, 4-0 in their home opener at Soldier Field.
Senior Vitor Mantovani put the Hillcats in front with some nifty footwork in the first half and RSU put the game away with three additional goals in the second frame. Mantovani beat a Warrior defender one-on-one to put the Cats in front in the 12th minute. That lead would hold until the 64th minute when Henrique Sousa scored from deep in the box on an assist from Luke Helm. Sophomore Chase Walker came off the bench to score the final two goals of the night.
"The guys got off to a very slow start, 1-0 at halftime, but coming off a loss on Friday we kind of expected a slow start," Coach Derek Larkin said. "They finally picked it up with three goals in the second half and it was a great result."
Junior goalkeeper Sean Surridge earned the shutout with two saves. The Hillcats outshot the Warriors 23-6 and registered 13 shots on goal. Tyler Perry recorded nine saves for Bacone.
Rogers State (1-1) evened its record for the season after dropping a 2-1 decision Friday at Northeastern State. The Hillcats will enjoy a 10-day layoff before returning to Soldier Field to host Our Lady of the Lake Sept. 11, in Claremore.
