CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a bang on Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
Â
The Hillcats plated 20 runs and cranked out 25 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Baptist. RSU scored at least three runs in each of the first three innings of the opener and posted an 11-6 victory. The Cats nearly run-ruled OBU in the nightcap with nine early runs, but settled for a 9-2 win in seven innings.
GAME ONE
Â
The RSU offense wasted no time getting started in the first game of the twin bill. Ashlie Fauchier, Taryn Hernandez and Sarah Harvey ripped back-to-back-to-back singles to start the first inning and all three eventually scored to give the Cats a 3-2 lead. Two OBU errors led to three more runs in the second frame and freshman Shelby Brogdon belted a pinch-hit homer to spark a four-run third.
Â
The early run support was more than enough for starter Tye Coats. The right-hander threw a complete game, allowing six runs, three earned, over seven innings of work. Hernadez went 3 for 3 with four runs scored while Harvey tallied three RBI.
GAME TWO
Â
The Cats broke loose from a scoreless tie with six runs in the third inning and never looked back in the nightcap. Dina Ortiz and Linsey Curtis delivered RBI singles during the rally and Coats chased two more runs home with a double down the right field line.
Â
The Lady Bison got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Hillcats answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Hernandez doubled to start the at-bat and Harvey followed with a single. Curtis then swatted a towering opposite-field home run to right-centerfield. The Collinsville, Okla., product has cranked out eight home runs in her first 13 games as a freshman.
Â
Coats (6-3) again went the distance in the pitcher's circle to record the victory. She yielded two runs on five hits with strikeouts. Amanda Hanner suffered the loss for OBU after giving up nine runs over the first five innings.
Â
Harvey picked up three hits while Hernandez, Curtis, Coats, Ortiz and Katie Bointy tallied two apiece.
Â
Rogers State (10-3, 2-0) will travel to Conway, Ark., this weekend to participate in the Central Baptist Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
