Softball Hillcats Mash Mid-America Christian

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team used the long ball to post a doubleheader sweep over Mid-America Christian Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.

Eight of the Cats 10 runs came via a home run in the opener as RSU notched a 10-1 win in six innings. Freshman Shelby Brogdon turned a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 victory with one swing of the bat in the nightcap. Four different Hillcats went deep on the afternoon to help Coach Mark Dicus's club improve to 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

GAME ONE

Linsey Curtis, Marie Gaudet and Tye Coats belted homers in the opener to lead RSU to a short-game victory against the Lady Evangels

Ashlie Fauchier and Harvey singled in the bottom of the third inning before Curtis chased them home with her 12th home run of the season. Gaudet swatted a three-run homer in the fifth inning and Coats delivered a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the sixth.

The Hillcats racked up 15 hits off of MACU starter Jill Wilbanks. Wilbanks allowed 10 earned runs in just 5.1 innings of work. Coats was sharp in retiring the first nine hitters she faced. She earned a complete-game victory, scattering four hits across six innings with just one earned run.

Sarah Harvey tallied three hits while Fauchier, Curtis and Kaite Bointy had two apiece.

GAME TWO

The Lady Evangels put up a much bigger fight in the nightcap. MACU took a three-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but couldn't hold on.

Harvey was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Coats reached on an error by the second baseman. Gaudet cut the lead to two with an RBI single to left field before Brogdon turned the game around on the next pitch.

The Forney, Texas, native ripped a three-run shot over the boards in left-center to give the Cats a come-from-behind victory. It was the fifth home run in 27 at-bats for Brogdon during her freshman season.

The Lady Evangels looked as if they might salvage a split when they plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Shancie Brown singled to right field and Ashley Newman cranked a two-run homer to left. Three more MACU hits followed to make it 5-1. However, the lead wouldn't hold for long.

After Brogdon's blast, Coats (10-4) retired the Evangels in order in the seventh to earn her second win of the afternoon. The right-hander yielded five runs, four earned, on 10 hits while striking out four. Caitlyn Ulmer was tagged with the loss for MACU in a complete-game performance.

Rogers State (16-4, 4-0) will travel to Chickasha, Okla., Wednesday for a conference doubleheader against the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. First pitch has been moved up to 1 p.m.
