Softball Cats Sneak Past Drovers Twice

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State ran its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Monday at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.

The Hillcats cranked out three home runs en route to a 6-2 victory in the opener. RSU battled back from a two-run deficit in the nightcap to complete the sweep with a 4-3 win.

GAME ONE

Three RSU players left the yard in Monday's first contest as the Cats outhit the Drovers, 9-3. Freshmen Linsey Curtis and Shelby Brogdon ripped back-to-back singles and later scored to go in front 2-1 in the second inning.

Taryn Hernandez made it a two-run game with a blast to left-center in the third and Katrina Loy followed with a solo shot to deep centerfield in the fourth. Curtis tacked on her 20th homer of the spring in the fifth with a moon shot that left the entire ballpark and landed on Blue Starr Drive.

Hernandez came on in relief of Tye Coats in the first inning and recorded every out to earn the victory. The lefthander allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four. Michelle Bauer took the loss for USAO.

GAME TWO

The Drovers' offense came alive with two home runs in the nightcap before the Cats rallied for a one-run victory.

Bauer and Whitney Bellamy belted back-to-back homers in the top of the third inning to stake USAO to a 3-1 lead. However, RSU came right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the advantage. Brittany White delivered the crushing blow with a clutch bases-loaded, two-out hit. The junior ripped a double off the centerfield wall that cleared the bases and put the Cats in front for good.

Hernandez (11-2) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth and retired the final seven Drovers in order to record her second win of the day. Ashlyn Kimberly was tagged with the loss for USAO.

Rogers State (30-14, 11-9) secured its fourth consecutive 30-win season with the doubleheader sweep. The Hillcats will hit the road Tuesday for a twin bill at Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
