Game Recap: Baseball |

Hillcats Take Final Two Games in Texas

DALLAS, Texas - The Rogers State baseball team avenged its only loss of the young season by edging Tabor College Monday and then pounded Dallas Christian for the third time in as many games.

The Diamond Cats scored two first-inning runs and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Coach Ron Bradley's club then closed out the road trip in style with a 12-2 drubbing of Dallas Christian to improve to 5-1 on the season.

GAME ONE (vs. Tabor College)
RSU cashed in on an early mistake by Tabor College and the pitching staff did the rest.

Senior Brandt Barnes led off the top of the first inning with a single to right field and scored the first run on a two-out fielding error at third base. Cody Campbell made it 2-0 with an RBI single to left to score Randy Ramirez.

That proved to be just enough offense for the Cats thanks to a dominating pitching effort. Junior Tyler Garner held the Blue Jays down for five innings, allowing no runs and just three hits. The Poteau, Okla., native struck out six without yielding a walk in his first start of the spring.

Junior Matt Sample came on in relief of Eric Faust in the sixth and recorded the final five outs to record his second save in as many days. Sample minimized the damage in the sixth after inheriting runners at second and third with only one out. The Pea Ridge, Ark., product yielded an RBI groundout and picked up a crucial strikeout to keep the lead intact. Sample retired the Blue Jays in order in the seventh to nail down the win.

Barnes tallied two of the Cats five hits while Garner improved to 1-0 with the pitching victory. Brent McKinnon took the loss for Tabor after giving up two unearned runs in 3.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO (vs. Dallas Christian)
The Hillcats pounded out 12 hits and run-ruled Dallas Christian for the third straight day with a 12-2 victory in the final game of the road trip.

RSU batted around in the second and third innings en route to claiming a 10-1 advantage. Junior Frensly Martina delivered the final blow with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to reach the final margin.

Sophomore Colton Campbell led the offensive attack with three hits while Joe Manbodh, Keith Poverud and Martina added two apiece. Manbodh paced the scoring production with four RBI.

Jacob Weenas earned the pitching victory after giving up two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Junior Zack Williams tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to complete the win.

Rogers State (5-1) returns to Claremore riding a four-game winning streak. The Hillcats will take four days off before hosting Ottawa University and Baker University in a four-game series at the Hillcat Complex Saturday and Sunday.
