Hillcat Softball Splits with No. 9 Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee seems to be the place to be for Hillcats with the women's basketball team in Jackson, Tenn. The Rogers State softball team headed to Nashville to face No. 9 Trevecca Nazarene University Tuesday at the Trojan Softball Complex.

Hopefully the softball Cats set the tone of success for RSU in Tennessee as RSU lost 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader but claimed the 8-7 victory over the Trojans in game two.

GAME ONE

Rogers State jumped on the scoreboard first when a misplayed grounder by Kari Mason at second base for the Trojans scored Brittany White from second.

Trevecca responded in the bottom of the second to tie the contest when Haylee Rogers' sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Lauren Baker, after Baker got on base with a shallow single down the right field line.

The Trojans took the lead off a two-run homerun to right field by Rogers scored Breanna Zeis and put te score at 3-1. RSU answered with back-to-back homeruns by Logan Zamora and Sarah Harvey, both to left field, in the top of the fifth tying the game at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh the Hillcats were unable to score despite having Harvey on second in scoring position with just one out. Two pop flies to center field ended the inning and gave Trevecca a shot to end the contest prior to extra innings.

Baker singled up the middle to start the inning and advanced to second when Ashley Wailand walked Heather Shuler. Amanda Edwards was called upon by coach Mark Dicus and she forced a fly-out to right by Zeis moved Baker to third and Rogers singled to score Baker, ending the game 4-3.

Wailand (8-3) registered the loss after six and one-third innings allowing nine hits and four earned runs giving up four walks.

Lauren Baker (7-0) recorded the win for TNU giving up two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out eight.

GAME TWO

Dina Ortiz cranked a two-run home run, scoring Sarah Harvey, in the top of the second to get things going. Ashlie Fauchier added to the Cats tally with a two-run shot of her own scoring Katrina Loy and giving RSU a 4-0 lead after the top of two.

Trevecca got on the board in the bottom of the third as Mason scored on a bases loaded walk. One batter later, Zeis, hit a grand slam and gave the Trojans the 5-4 lead. TNU wasn't done as Rogers tripled deep down the right field line and later scored on a double to deep center by Melinda Peterson. That gave TNU the 6-4 lead. The Trojans added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Zeis singled to score Karli Rush from third.

Ashlee Dillman, pinch running for Shelby Brogdon after the sophomore singled, scored on a single by Taran Threet to trim the TNU lead to just one run.

A Brogdon double to deep center-field scored Harvey, Angelina Vines and moved Loy to third. A passed ball scored Loy from third base putting RSU up 8-7 and three outs away from the victory.

RSU was able to sit down three straight and knock off the No. 9 Trojans.
