SHAWNEE, Okla. - Rogers State softball was able to tap the breaks on a six game losing streak to split at St. Gregory's Tuesday afternoon.
The Hillcats claimed game one, 6-5, over the Lady Cavaliers but fell in the second contest, 6-0.
GAME ONE
The Hillcats started the opening of the double header affair off right with a RBI single to centerfield by Amanda Edwards scoring Sarah Harvey from second. Katrina Loy doubled to left-center field to score Edwards from first to give RSU the 2-0 lead after just one-half inning.
SGU answered on a triple by Kristin Wehmeyer to score Cortney Reynaga from second and cut the Hillcat lead to 2-1.
RSU stretched the lead to 3-1 with a Harvey first pitch, home run to center field in the top of the third. A pair of home runs by Reynaga and Autumn Brown pulled SGU within one run after three innings of play.
Loy scored on a double to center by Logan Zamora in the top of the fourth inning to rebuild the Cats lead to two runs. RSU added to the run total in the fifth inning as Taran Threet hit a two-run home run to left field, putting RSU up 6-3.
SGU posted a response in the home half of the fifth when HayLea Harper scored on a Brown single. The Lady Cavaliers made its final push in the seventh with a single by Wehmeyer to score Blair Brooks but SGU couldn't post another run and RSU came away with the 6-5 victory.
Edwards recorded the win for the Hillcats, going the complete game and giving up five runs on 12 hits while striking out three.
Kailee Neal got the loss after going six innings, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out six.
GAME TWO
SGU got the second game going with a two run first inning on a single to shallow right by Wehmeyer that scored Brooks. Reynaga scored on the throw giving the Lady Cavaliers an early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Cavs added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Tara Nall scored on a single by Morgan Garman.
The bottom of the sixth stretched the lead to its final mark as Emily Ledinski reached via an error. Ledinski eventually scored on an error by the Hillcats. HayLea Harper's two run, home run to deep, right center field put SGU up 6-0.
Kailee Neal earned the win for the Lady Cavaliers going a complete game giving up six hits and striking out four batters.
Ashley Wailand received the loss after pitching two-third innings and giving up two runs with one walk and no strikeouts.
Rogers State (23-14, 3-7) will return to the Hillcat Complex on Saturday, April 2 with a double header affair against Southern Nazarene. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and RSU Radio 91.3FM will broadcast both games.
