Complete Game by Cosby Fuels Diamond Cats Victory

CLAREMORE, Okla. - In what will likely be his second to last appearance at Hillcat Complex, Grant Cosby made the most of it with a complete game shutout of St. Gregory's, as No. 15 Rogers State baseball defeated the Cavaliers 5-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Cosby pitched just 77 pitches in the nine inning contest giving up just three hits while issuing five strike outs and no walks.

The Fayetteville, Ark. native was aided by a strong wind blowing in and a stingy defense behind him as the Hillcats had just one error.

The third inning saw RSU jump on the board with three runs, the first coming on a solo shot over the left field fence by senior Jairo Valdez. The 340 foot blast was the Lynn, Mass. native's first home run of the season.

Colton West hit an RBI single to score Brandt Barnes and Randy Ramirez's sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Cade McKewon to put RSU up 3-0 after three innings.

The Diamond Cats added another run in the fourth inning off a sac-fly by Barnes to score Colton Campbell. An insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off a RBI single by Ramirez to advance Barnes home, put the score at its final mark of 5-0.

Ramirez went 2-for-4 for the game with 2 RBI, while Valdez was just 1-for-3 with the home run.

Cosby earned the victory, moving to 5-1 on the season as he faced 31 batters total.

Cody Wheeler went the complete game for the Cavaliers giving up five runs on 11 hits in the loss, moving to 2-7 on the year. Wheeler walked six and struck out five while throwing 160 pitches.

Rogers State (35-10, 14-8) with the victory matched a single season record for wins, tying the mark set in 2008 when the Hillcats went 35-16. Coach Ron Bradley's squad will look to get the sweep of SGU as the Cats head on the road to Shawnee, Okla. Saturday with a double header starting at 1 p.m.
