Hillcats Outshined by No. 11 Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - No. 11 Oklahoma City reiterated its ranking in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll with a pair of victories over Rogers State Tuesday evening at Ann Lacy Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The Stars captured a 7-0 victory in the opening game and followed that with an 8-0 win in the nightcap of the twin bill.

GAME ONE

OCU jumped on the Hillcats early with a pair of three run innings. The Stars got on the board in the first inning as Lily LaVelle scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Caruthers. Magean De La Torre's two RBI double scored LeeAnn Lopez and Nathalie Timmermans to give OCU a 3-0 lead after just one inning.

The second wasn't any more favorable for RSU as Caruthers' two out single to right centerfield scored three Stars, putting the score at 6-0.

The Stars added an insurance run in the fourth as Timmermans grounded out to second, scoring LaVelle and putting the score at its final mark of 7-0.

Lily LaVelle (23-7) earned the win going seven scoreless innings giving up two hits as she sat down 13 batters and issued just three walks.

RSU threw three pitchers in the opening game as Ashley Wailand (13-11) received the loss giving up two earned runs on just one hit and walking one of three batters she faced in the first inning before being replaced by Amanda Edwards. Edwards went two innings giving up four earned runs on four hits. Katie Bointy went four innings striking out three and walking one while allowing just one earned run on no hits.

GAME TWO

The closing game of the double header wasn't any more favorable for the Cats as OCU Lopez singled through the hole at shortstop to score Tori Joyner and give the Stars a 1-0 lead after one inning.

LaVelle doubled to score Kylee Rounsaville and put OCU on the board in the second. Joyner's sac-fly scoring Shari Misuraca put the Stars up 3-0 in the second.

The Stars bumped the lead even more in the third inning with four runs on just four hits as the Hillcats committed one error. Chelsey Eddy's ground out to second scored the final run in the fourth inning as the Hillcats were run ruled in five innings, 8-0.

A.J. Woodward (16-4) went five innings giving up four hits and two walks while striking out five RSU batters.

Bointy (1-3) got the start and the loss for the Cats in the second game. The Anadarko, Okla. senior struck out one while walking three and giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings pitched.

Oklahoma City (40-11, 22-4) claimed a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title with the sweep of RSU Tuesday.

Rogers State (32-26, 9-17) will get set for the SAC Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. as it gets underway Friday, May 6.
