SHAWNEE, Okla. – On the same night Oklahoma Baptist celebrated the opening of Lady Bison Park the Rogers State softball team was unable to spoil the party as the host Lady Bison topped the Hillcats in the doubleheader Tuesday evening.
The Cats dropped the first game 5-1 and followed with a 6-3 loss in the nightcap as OBU tallied double digit hits in both games.
GAME ONE
Both squads were held scoreless in the first three innings but the Lady Bison quickly changed the tally in the bottom of the fourth. OBU started the inning with a solo shot by Kenna Self to centerfield on a 2-0 count. A RBI single by Ashley Clifton to left scored Krystal Johnson the next at bat scored Audrey Branscum on a passed ball. Allison Tunnell singled to center to score Clifton and put the Lady Bison up 4-0.
In the sixth inning the Cats plated a run on a Linsey Curtis RBI ground out to score Shonna Guerrero and trim the OBU lead to 4-1.
OBU regained the four run advantage in the bottom half of the same inning as Clifton scored from second on a single through the hole at shortstop by Candace Holden as the Lady Bison built the advantage to 5-1.
The Cats were unable to get any offense going in the top of the seventh as OBU pitcher Cassidi Henderson (6-5) earned the win for the Lady Bison. Henderson went seven innings allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out three batters.
Laura Fleck received the loss for RSU in the circle after allowing 14 hits and giving up five runs, four of them earned. The Muskogee, Okla. native fanned two Lady Bison batters.
GAME TWO
In the nightcap of the doubleheader the Hillcats gave up 11 hits in the 6-3 loss to the Lady Bison.
OBU gained a 1-0 advantage in the first inning on a RBI single up the middle by Dara Gray scoring Ashley Clifton.
The Hillcats answered with a run in the second and two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Katrina Loy scored on a RBI triple by Megan Williams in the top of the second to get the RSU scoring rolling. Fleck led off the third with a homerun to right field on a 3-1 count, the freshman's first homerun of her collegiate career. Later that inning Kaitlin McCool scored on a sacrifice fly by Guerrero to right to put the Cats up.
The RSU lead didn't last long as the Bison scored three runs in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to push the score to its final mark of 6-3.
Chianelle Flores (3-1) received the win pitching four innings in relief action allowing one run on two hits and fanning three batters. Cassidi Henderson registered her second save of the season for the Bison pitching just one inning and striking out one.
Laura Fleck started for the Hillcats and gave up one earned run on one hit before Linsey Curtis came in relief action. Curtis (4-1) recorded the loss after pitching six innings and allowing five earned runs on ten hits. The junior issued three walks but struck out two in her first loss in the circle this season.
Katilin McCool went 2-for-4 and plated a run in the nightcap as the Cats were held to just five runs in the game.
