AMARILLO, Texas – The Rogers State women's golf team shot the best team round Tuesday on the way to a fourth place finish at the Lady Buff Stampede at Tascosa Country Club.
The Hillcats shot 317 in second round action Tuesday besting Monday's opening round by eleven strokes for a 645 tournament team total to finish just two strokes behind host and host West Texas A&M. RSU moved up three spots with the strong second round performance after entering day two in seventh place in the 17 team field.
Senior Whitney Hocutt led the Hillcats in her first action of the season as the Claremore, Okla. native posted scores of 81 and 78 for a 159 tournament card to tie for tenth. Raquel Trevino matched Hocutt's Tuesday score of 78 but trailed by a stroke in the opening round Monday. Trevino finished tied for 13th penciling a 160 total.
Kina Boone careded rounds of 80-81 for a 161 and tie for 18th on the par 72, 5,950 yard Tascosa Country Club. The windy weather Tuesday didn't deter sophomore Kelsey Stuever from besting her opening round 88. Stuever posted an 80 despite the windy conditions to finish 39th with a 168 in the 88 player field. A pair of 85's put Chelsea Burney tied for 41st as her consistent play totaled a 170 on the two-day, two-round tournament.
Colorado State-Pueblo made the most of an opening round 305 as the ThunderWolves shot 328 to earn two-stroke victory over second place Midwestern State to claim the team title. Julie Sanchez led the TimberWolves as she shot 74 (+2) and 76 for a 150 and the individual crown.
Rogers State is set to travel to the Dallas Baptist Invitational at Dallas National Golf Club October 14-15.
