LUBBOCK, Texas – Blair Thomas and Carley Johnson scored for the Rogers State women's soccer team but its comeback bid came up short falling 3-2 at Lubbock Christian in Heartland Conference action Saturday at LCU Soccer Field.
 
After the Chaps opened the scoring with a Claudia Sanchez tally 21 seconds into the match, the Hillcats settled down and wasted no time getting the equalizer.
 
Thomas knotted the score 1-1 for RSU after intercepting a pass from LCU goalkeeper Lauren Story and posting her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 6th minute.
 
Brooke Wendl scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon in the 34th minute giving the home sided Chaps a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
 
Wendl gave LCU a two-goal lead in the 62nd minute scoring her team and conference-leading 13th goal of the year directly off a corner kick.
 
The Hillcats would not go down quietly as they cut the deficit to one behind Johnson's first goal of the season. Johnson pounced on a rebound from a Jianna Cervantes shot after a corner kick by Thomas in the 70th minute making the score 3-2 but they could not find another tying goal over the final 20 minutes.
 
Teri Cocke suffered the loss for RSU making four saves while Story picked up the win making two saves for the Chaps as they extend their winning streak to six games.
 
The Hillcats (0-13 overall, 0-4 HC) return to action Monday heading to Odessa, Texas to face Texas-Permian Basin. The match is scheduled for a noon kickoff.
