WICHITA, Kan. –
Danny Sanchez scored on a penalty kick to propel the Rogers State men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Newman on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Wilkins Field in the regular season finale.
The Hillcats will now prepare to play at Newman again on Tuesday (Nov. 1) in the Heartland Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to the tournament semifinals hosted by Midwestern State, the league regular season champion.
Sanchez, a senior midfielder from Miami, Florida, scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute as he sent in a shot that went low and to the left of the NU goalkeeper.
With RSU preparing for the Heartland Conference Tournament on Tuesday, six Hillcats made their first starts of the season. Striker
Abe Young led the Cats with two shots on goal, a game high.
The host Jets finished with a slight advantage of 12-8 in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. After NU held a 5-1 advantage in the first half, the two teams played even in shots at 7-7.
In his first start of his RSU career,
Walker Farrar got the shutout win in goal. The junior from Topeka, Kansas made five saves in 90 minutes to keep a clean sheet.
The Hillcats (10-5-3, 7-5-2) end the regular season with its second straight season of 10 wins as the 10-5-3 mark matches their 2015 record. The men's soccer team becomes the first team to play in postseason since becoming NCAA Division II members. RSU plays in the Heartland Conference Tournament at Newman on Tuesday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. at Wilkins Field in Wichita, Kansas.
