WICHITA, Kan. – The Rogers State softball team needed only two runs to get a 2-1 win as shortstop
Morgen Blanchard blasted a two-run home run in the series finale against Newman at the Newman Softball Field. The Hillcats took the three-game series, 2-1, after splitting a doubleheader yesterday.
For the first time since becoming a member of the Heartland Conference, RSU won consecutive league series as the Hillcats took a series against Texas-Permian Basin last weekend in Claremore.
Morgen Blanchard plated the two RSU runs on a two-run homer to left field in the sixth inning for a 2-0 edge.
The host Jets put one run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sac fly, but the NU rally fell short as the Hillcats retired the final two batters for the 2-1 victory.
Mayra Helguera and
Jessica Christian combined to pitch a strong outing for the Hillcats. Helguera started in the circle, going 3.1 innings and allowing only five hits and zero runs. Christian came in to pitch the final 3.2, getting the win and allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. The one run allowed is the lowest given up by the staff this season in conference play.
Taylor Santistevan went 2-for-3 at the plate as RSU finished with seven hits in the game.
The Hillcats (14-21, 4-11 Heartland Conference) step out of conference play next Wednesday (March 30) at Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
