CLAREMORE, Okla. –
Taylor Williams scored an equalizer in the 86th minute as the Rogers State women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 24 St. Edward's Thursday night at Soldier Field.
The sophomore forward was in perfect position to bury a rebound after
Marlaina Trahant's initial shot was saved off the goal line by the Hilltoppers' defense with just 4:24 remaining in regulation. The teams remained deadlocked through two periods of extra time finishing off the tie.
It was a night where the Hillcats stuck to their gameplan and showed off their fitness level on a hot and humid night on the Hill. Despite being out-shot by a 24-4 margin in 110 minutes, RSU remained within striking distance holding a potent SEU offense in check into a scoreless opening stanza. RSU goalkeeper
Tayler Stover came up with a clutch save with less than 10 minutes in the first half off an India Wentz header to the back post.
The Hilltoppers finally cracked through breaking the tie in the 53rd minute as Kelly Andrus took a high-bouncing cross and headed it over Stover's head for the 1-0 edge. The Hillcats would not back down and increased the pressure offensively finally getting the equalizer from Williams at the 85:36 mark.
Stover and the defense held firm in overtime as the sophomore made four of her 11 saves in the added periods preserving the draw.
The Hillcats (4-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 HC) return to action Sept. 24 for a matchup with Heartland Conference preseason favorite Dallas Baptist. Catch the match live at noon from Soldier Field and on the Hillcat Network at
