Hillcats Pick Up Point with Draw at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – The Rogers State men's soccer team earned a point in the conference standings with a 0-0 draw at Newman on Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon at Wilkins Field.
 
With the draw, the Hillcats posted a three-game unbeaten streak that includes two straight draws. RSU moved to 6-5-3 on the season and 3-4-3 in the Heartland Conference.
 
RSU had a dangerous opportunity in the 32nd minute of the contest when a cross from the Cats bounced off the crossbar and to freshman Jarrod Cooper, but his chance was blocked by a Newman defender to keep the game scoreless.
 
In the first overtime period, the Hillcats had a renewed energy and put pressure on the host Jets. Jake Simpson's shot from in the box in the first minute of overtime forced Newman's goalkeeper Chase Bowman to make a save. The Cats tallied three more shots in the first overtime, but all three attempts went wide of frame. RSU posted a 4-0 lead in shots in the first overtime.
 
The final minutes of the second overtime saw the Jets place two shots on goal, but starting goalkeeper Walker Farrar grabbed two saves to keep the contest scoreless.
 
For the 110 minutes, the navy and red held a 14-9 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in the second half and overtime. Simpson, who was making his first start since Sep. 30 at Dallas Baptist University, registered a game-high four shots.
 
Farrar earned the shutout in goal, his third of the season. The Topeka, Kan. native totaled three saves in 110 minutes.
 
The Hillcats continue their three-game road trip at Texas A&M International on Thursday (Oct. 19) in Laredo, Texas. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
