Hillcats Stay Perfect at Home with Doubleheader Sweep of SBU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State softball team moved to 6-0 at home this season with two wins over Southwest Baptist on Wednesday (March 1) at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Hillcats won by the scores of 3-1 and 8-0 to extend their winning streak to six-straight games.

Megan Rosewell picked up both of the wins in the circle as she increased her streak of innings without an earned run to 24. For the season, the junior is 13-2 in the circle.

Rogers State 3, Southwest Baptist 1

The Hillcats (14-3) used timely hitting to slowly build a three-run advantage in the first game before allowing a late unearned run in the 3-1 victory.

After Kayla Patterson opened the second inning with a lead-off triple to the right corner, Ali Turner brought Patterson home with a single to center for an early 1-0 edge for the navy and red.

RSU doubled its margin to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Harli Wheeler singled to right to score Mikayla Waggnor from second base.

The final RSU run came in the sixth inning when an infield single from lead-off hitter Katelyn Gamble drove in Waggnor for the second time and for a 3-0 score after six innings.

SBU plated its lone run in the seventh inning due to an error from the Hillcat defense for the final 3-1 margin.

Seven different Hillcats tallied hits in the game. Waggnor finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Gamble, Turner and Wheeler each totaled one RBI.

Rosewell went the complete 7.0 innings in the opening game of the doubleheader, allowing only four hits and the one unearned run. She posted three strikeouts.

The Cats gave SBU's Kacey Ayers only her second loss of the season as she dropped to 7-2 on the year. She allowed seven hits and the three runs in 6.0 innings.

The Hillcats jumped on the Bearcats in game two as the navy and red rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings.

De'Leigh Emarthle and Patterson used back-to-back solo home runs to score the first two runs of the game for an early 2-0 advantage in the third inning.

RSU poured on the runs in the fourth inning to bust out to a 6-0 lead. Using patience at the plate, the Cats worked three-straight walks to load up the bases to start the inning. Wheeler singled up the middle to score the first run to make it 3-0, and Emarthle hit a towering fly ball to right field that was dropped to let three Hillcats come around to score for a 6-0 advantage.

The Cats ended the game in the fifth with two runs to pick up the 8-0 run-rule victory. After Arika Araujo doubled to the gap in right to start the inning, Waggnor singled to put runners at the corner, however, another SBU error scored pinch runner Kenzi Lloyd for a 7-0 score. Taylor Santistevan ended the game with a walk-off double to the wall in right center to score Waggnor for the fourth time in the doubleheader and increase the score to 8-0.

The navy and red used a balanced offensive attack with six Cats posting hits. Waggnor went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Rosewell pitched a two-hitter in the nightcap with one strikeout in 5.0 innings. The junior was efficient as she threw only 51 pitches. With the two wins on the day, Rosewell moved to 13-2 on the season.
