Dustdevils Sweep Hillcats to Start Three-Game Series

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State softball team's offense couldn't get going as the Hillcats were swept by Texas A&M International on Friday at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Dustdevils won the games by the scores of 3-0 and 4-1 to pick up the two league victories.

Texas A&M International 3, Rogers State 0

The Dustdevils (12-20, 6-2 Heartland) hit a two-run home run, and the Hillcat bats totaled only two hits as TAMIU picked up the 3-0 game one victory.

TAMIU started the scoring with a two-run homer to left field in the second inning to take a 2-0 advantage. In the third inning, a double to the gap in right center plated one more run for the 3-0 score.

The navy and red managed only two hits and were robbed of a few more due to some outstanding defensive plays from the Dustdevils. After Mikayla Waggnor singled to center in the second inning, a line drive was snagged by TAMIU's third basemen, who threw over to first for a double play to end RSU's chance.

RSU tallied its second hit in the fifth inning on a Danelle Day single to left. For the second straight time in the game, a double play ended the inning after a hit by the Cats. Katelyn Gamble's hard hit ball went right to second for the first out, and the throw back to first ended the inning.

Sara Caterson pitched the complete-game two-hitter for the Dustdevils. She posted two strikeouts with the two hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Edie Fairchild started in the circle for the navy and red, going the complete 7.0 innings. The freshman allowed the three runs on six hits with one strikeout. Fairchild dropped to 2-2 on the season.

The Hillcats took an early lead in the nightcap with one run in the first, but the visiting Dustdevils scored runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to earn the 4-1 win.

In the first inning, Arika Araujo put the Cats up 1-0 with a single to left field to score Harli Wheeler. The senior shortstop started the inning with a single up the middle as the Cats tallied two of their three hits during the inning.

The Dustdevils tied the score in the fourth inning due to an error from the Hillcats to even the game at 1-1.

TAMIU gained the edge for the first time with two runs during the fifth inning. After a single and a sac bunt put a Dustdevil at second, a bunt single moved runners to the corners. TAMIU took the lead with an infield single to score the baserunner from third. A groundout upped the score to 3-1. The Dustdevils added an insurance run in the seventh with a sac fly.

Delainy Thompson went the full 7.0 innings for the three-hitter. She allowed the one run and posted seven strikeouts.

Megan Rosewell started for the Hillcats and allowed three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. She dropped to 17-11 on the season in the circle.

The Hillcats and Dustdevils conclude the three-game series tomorrow (April 1) with the finale at 12 p.m. at the Diamond Sports Complex. Coverage will be available on 91.3 FM and on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
