CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State baseball team swept the three-game series with Newman with a 3-2 victory over Newman on Saturday at the Diamond Sports Complex. The victory increased the Hillcat winning streak to nine-straight games as the navy and red moved into second in the league standing at 10-5.
RSU built an early 3-0 lead and held on after the Jets tried to rally as the Hillcats earned the win, 3-2. The Cats went in front early with two runs in the second inning for a 2-0 edge. After Marley opened the inning with a single, his 15th-straight game with a hit, and moved to second on a stolen base,
Brooks Douglass drove Marley in with a double to left.
Sam Casinelli made it back-to-back RBI hits for RSU with a single through the infield to left to score Douglass for the early 2-0 lead.
The Hillcats added one more run in the fourth inning when Douglass singled to center to score Marley for the 3-0 margin.
NU cut the deficit to only one run with a two-run double by Brian Canfield for a 3-2 score. The Jets had the tying run at third base with two outs, but the Cats forced a groundout to get out of the inning.
The Jets again had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth inning, but
Devland Zakar forced two consecutive fly outs to end the threat.
Douglass posted a 2-for-3 hitting performance with two RBI. Marley continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-4, totaling hits in his first two at bats.
Landon Nealon moved to a perfect 4-0 on the season as he made the start, going 5.0 innings with two runs and seven hits allowed. Nealon totaled two strikeouts.
Rusty Huber totaled his nation-leading 10th save of the season as he closed out the final inning of the game. Zakar and
Justin Magstadt also pitched in relief, combining for 3.0 innings and two hits.
The Hillcats go on the road for four-straight games starting on Tuesday with a nonconference nine-inning contest at Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
