CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State and Newman combined for three goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation for a frantic finish to a 3-3 draw on Thursday (Oct. 4) night at Soldier Field.
Trailing 3-2 in the final minutes, the Hillcats (6-4-1, 4-2-1 Heartland Conference) tied the score at 3-3 in the 87th minute when
Pedro Garcia scored on a shot in front of the goal.
Cairo Allen got the assist on the game-tying tally.
The Jets (5-5-1, 2-4-1 Heartland) took the lead for the first time in the game only five minutes earlier on a hard shot from 35 yards that bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net for a 3-2 advantage in the 82nd minute. The Jets tallied two goals in less than four minutes as they evened the score at 2-2 in the 78th minute when Arnor Jonsson scored on a free kick goal from 25 yards to the upper left corner.
RSU held the lead twice in the contest. In the third minute of the game, senior
Kevin Kwarteng propelled the Cats to a 1-0 edge with a shot to the lower left corner.
Newman pulled even at 1-1 only nine minutes later with a goal in the 12th minute. The score remained tied at 1-1 after the first half.
The Hillcats went up for the second time in the game in the 61st minute on an own goal for a 2-1 score. A Jet defender headed the ball into their own net for the RSU tally.
RSU held a 16-12 advantage in shots for the 110 minutes, including a 10-4 margin in the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods. The Cats tallied the only two shots in the 20 minutes of overtime. Garcia paced the navy and red with four shots. A total of 11 Hillcats posted shots in the 110 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jazz Dhaliwal, who was named the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, made six saves in 110 minutes. He allowed three goals, his first goals allowed all season. Dhaliwal moved to 2-0-1 on the season in goal.
