CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball started the weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Newman to start a four-game nonconference series with the Jets at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Hillcats took game one, 4-3, and shutout the Jets, 2-0, in the nightcap.
The navy and red moved to 14-6 on the season, and the Jets dropped to 6-14. The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at the DSC.
RSU 4, NU 3
After falling behind early in the first inning, 1-0, the Hillcats put up three runs in the fourth and scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning for a 4-3 victory in game one.
The Jets gained an early lead due to two errors in the first by RSU and a passed ball scored the opening run for a 1-0 Newman edge.
The navy and red loaded the bases in the fourth inning and tied the score at 1-1 on a
Christopher Ford walk.
Matt Seubert drove in two runs with a single to center to give the Cats a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning.
RSU scored what would be the game-winning run in the sixth inning. After
Brendan Griffith doubled to lead off the inning, Ford advanced Griffith to third with a sac bunt, and a wild pitch allowed Griffin to score for a 4-1 margin.
Newman tried to rally in the seventh and final inning of game one, but came up one run short in the 4-3 game. The Jets plated one run on a double to the gap and added their final tally on a groundout; however, RSU starter
Spencer Bivens retired the final two Jets for the 4-3 Hillcat win.
Bevins earned another complete game victory, going 7.0 innings with six hits allowed and two earned runs. The senior moved to 5-1 and posted three strikeouts.
Zack Mann went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Seubert finished with a game-high two RBI.
RSU 2, NU 0
Seubert knocked out a solo home run and the RSU pitching staff shutout the Jets in game two in a 2-0 victory, sweeping the Friday afternoon doubleheader.
Seubert hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning to put the Cats up 1-0.
RSU doubled the edge to 2-0 in the eighth inning with a double to right by
Bradley Degnan to score
Cale Backward.
Drew Van Winkle was impressive in 6.0 innings on the mound, limiting the Jets to three hits with one strikeout and only one walk. The junior moved to 2-1 on the season.
Brock Knoten came in for the final 3.0 innings earned the save, his third of the season, with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Degnan went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Newman starter Roger Wilson pitched 6.0 innings for the Jets and totaled 11 strikeouts and only three hits allowed, but gave up five walks.
