Women's Soccer Season Comes to Close In Narrow Loss To Central Oklahoma

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State Women's Soccer's season came to a close on Sunday as the Hillcats fell to Central Oklahoma 1-0 in the regular season finale.

The loss sees the Hillcats miss the MIAA Tournament on a tiebreaker for the eighth and final spot, as Rogers State ended the season tied with Washburn on 10 points.

The Hillcats had their chances and narrowly missed an early lead as Maggie Brown struck a free kick from about 35 yards off the crossbar in the seventh minute.

Brown would have another free kick sail over the bar in the 32nd minute.

Rogers State defense was limiting the Bronchos over the first 38 minutes, holding the visitors to six shots, most of which were long distance, and none of them were on target.

However, the visitors would take the lead in the 39th minute on an individual effort from Kelsie Eason, who worked an opening in the penalty area and beat ReVella Fisher to the low right corner.

Rogers State would respond, as Kori Watters had a strong scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute, but the sophomore put a tight angle shot over the crossbar as the Hillcats went into the break trailing by one.

Central Oklahoma had a much more active second half, firing 16 shots, including six on target. However, the Hillcats and Fisher limited the quality opportunities from the Bronchos and stopped all six attempts, keeping it a one goal game.

Rogers State had a few strong chances in the second half, including a tight-angled shot by Audrey Maxwell that was pushed aside by Kaitlyn Asher.

In the 57th minute, Hannah Mushisky was inches away from tying the game for the Hillcats as she headed a cross down and past Asher, but the ball hit the inner half of the left post and stayed out of the goal.

The game would take a turn in the 63rd minute, as Laurelle Theodore was shown a red card after her second yellow of the game.

However, the Hillcats would still put two quality scoring chances toward goal despite being down a woman.

Janell Hernandez fired past Asher, but inches over the crossbar in the 65th minute.

With 32 seconds left in the game, Brown sent a free kick into the box from the left wing. After a flick on header by Mushisky, Hernandez smashed the ball into the back of the net for what appeared to be the tying goal with 24 seconds remaining. However, the goal was waved off as Hernandez was called for offside and Central Oklahoma saw out the remaining 24 seconds for the win.

Bailey Jarvis, the Hillcats only senior, started and played 52 minutes in the midfield in her final game in the navy and red.

Rogers State's season comes to a close with the Hillcats posting a 5-8-5 record, including a 2-5-4 record to finish in a tie for 8th in their first season in the MIAA.
