CLAREMORE, Okla. –
Grant King and
Jake Simpson scored second half goals to propel the No. 21 Rogers State Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday night at Soldier Field.
The Hillcats (3-0-1) faced a tough ThunderWolves (0-4-0) team, who have now fallen to three ranked teams in the first week. The visitors outshot the Hillcats 6-2 in the first half despite a 50-50 split in possession over the first 45 minutes.
Rogers State goalkeeper made three first-half saves and five total in his first cleansheet for the Hillcats.
The second half saw the visitors hold more possession, but Rogers State had more chances and made the most of them, starting with King's first goal as a Hillcat in the 56
th minute. King took a pass from Simpson and worked his way into the box on the right corner before firing a shot across the goal and into the top left corner to give Rogers State the lead.
The Hillcats would hold off pressure from the ThunderWolves throughout the second half and Simpson would take direct aim at the visitor goal on several occasions.
Simpson would force three quality saves from Tyler Harvey who had to go into full stretch in the 63
rd, 64
th and 66
th minutes to stop a pair of Simpson shots from open play and another from a free kick.
Following the flurry of shots, the Hillcats would not get another shot on target until Simpson beat Harvey from the top of the box. Simpson took a pass from the right wing by
Callum Hubble and smashed a right-footed shot into the lower left corner.
The goal was Simpson's fourth goal in four games, scoring in all four games for the Hillcats this season.
The win for the Hillcats also matched the program's longest unbeaten run to start a season in school history of four games in 2016, which also included three wins and a tie.
Rogers State will now enter conference play undefeated on the season. The Hillcats will travel to Newman to open up GAC play on Thursday night in Wichita. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
