KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Rogers State Men's Soccer picked up a 2-2 draw on the road Sunday afternoon at Rockhurst.
An action packed second half saw the Hillcats battle from behind twice in the match to force overtime, as the Hillcats (1-0-1) remain unbeaten on the season.
Rockhurst (0-1-1) would find the original breakthrough in the 62
nd minute, capitalizing on a Hillcat foul and a mistimed clearing attempt from
Austin Wormell.
Adam Burnett sent a freekick into the edge of the six-yard box from approximately 35 yards out on the left wing. Wormell came out to punch the ball clear, but collided with a Hawks attacker and two Hillcat defenders and the free kick bounced in, as Burnett was credited with the goal.
Like the season opener, it would be
Jake Simpson who found the equalizer for the Hillcats, scoring in the 73
rd minute on a strong effort that included beating three Rockhurst defenders and the Hawks' keeper.
Luke Morgan started the goal-scoring play by finding Simpson on the run when he played a long ball over the defense from well within the defensive zone for the Hillcats. Simpson then battled a Hawks defender in the box and then held off goalkeeper Peter Baker, who's sliding attempt failed to clear the ball from Simpson's feet. With Baker out of position, Simpson turned and fired from the top of the box, beating two defenders and Baker has he found the center of an open net to make it 1-1.
However, the hosts would break the tie again 11 minutes later. Luke Rafenen would control a long ball into the box and was able to sneak a sliding shot between Wormell and the right post to put Rockhurst back in front in the 84
th minute.
This time, Rogers State would quickly equalize as Morgan would score 1:53 later, tying the game at 2 in the 85
th minute.
After
Jordan Watson's free kick into the box was partially cleared,
Noah Robson played the ball from the edge of the area to the back post. Jamie Ponce would head the ball past Baker but off the right post. Morgan followed up Ponce's effort and smashed the rebound in for his second goal of the season.
The first half saw a back-and-forth contest with both teams putting three shots on goal.
Noah Robson was issued a yellow card in the first half as well, but the teams went into the halftime break tied at 0.
Watson would have the only shot on target in the second half prior to Rockhurst's opening goal. Rockhurst was issued two yellow cards in the second half.
In the first overtime, Rockhurst would have the only major scoring chance as Connor Blentinger wrapped a free kick around the wall, only to be pushed away for a corner by Wormell.
Callum Hubble and Morgan would both be issued a yellow card in the first overtime.
The second overtime saw Rockhurst with four corner kicks to just one for the Hillcats, but both teams were only able to get one shot on target.
Rogers State will return to action on Thursday with their home opener. The Hillcats will welcome in former Heartland Conference rival Oklahoma Christian for a non-conference matchup at Soldier Field. Rogers State will kickoff with the Eagles at 7 p.m.
