Baseball Falls In Final Game of Series At Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Rogers State baseball team dropped the third and final game of its MIAA series with Northwest Missouri State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Baseball Field.

How It Happened
  • The Hillcats and Bearcats were in a pitching duel with both pitchers recording a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the first four innings. Corey Murphy had six strikeouts in the first four innings for the Hillcats.
  • Northwest Missouri took the lead in the fifth inning. The Bearcats loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on a single to left field before the Hillcats defense threw out a second runner at home and between first and second.
  • After a scoreless sixth, the Hillcats tied the game in the seventh as Brandon Bradshaw worked a one-out walk and then scored on a double down the left-field line by Jerry Davis.
  • The Bearcats responded with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh for the final run of the game.
  • Rogers State would get a base runner on in the eighth and ninth, but couldn't ger past second.
Game Notes
  • Murphy recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings, matching a season high for the senior.
  • Davis was the only Hillcat with two base hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with a double and the RBI.
  • Bradshaw reached base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk and the only Hillcat run.
  • With the loss, the Hillcats were swept in a MIAA series for the first time this season.
  • The Hillcats have yet to win an MIAA road game, going 0-6 last season and 0-3 this season.
  • Mason Harvey had the only other hit for the Hillcats in the game.
  • Prescott Horn made his first start in a fielding position, playing left field. He had one ealk in the game.
  • Rogers State as an athletic department falls to 0-7 in all competitions at Northwest Missouri.
Up Next
Rogers State will remain on the road for the second of three straight MIAA series away from home as they travel to Hays, Kansas to take on Fort Hays State. The Hillcats and Tigers are set to play a single game on Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. in the series opener at Larks Park. The two teams are then set for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 beginning at noon to close out the series.
